Hi All,

There has been lots of hype around 3D and if its here to stay or is it just a passing fad. Well lets have a look at whats happening in the industry....

Movies Being Released...

There are plenty of movies now getting released at the cinema, Avatar, Toy Storey 3, Alice in Wonderland, Shreck - Forever after, just to name a few. Nearly every movie getting released from now will inevitable have a 2D and a 3D version.

TV availability...

Samsung have released their first generation 3D tvs.

Sony are due to release theirs in July.

Sharp have released Suite of 3D projectors

Many more are to follow.

Content Online...

Hybrid TV services have also announced, and have already delivered to TiVo customers, sample content via their CASPA on Demand service. One would think with news of LG and Samsung signing a deal with Bigpond online to deliver movies over the internet, that 3D will be available here also.

Content OFF Air (Free-to-air TV)

Channel 9 and SBS have recently joined forces and delivered and continue to deliver the State of Origin and Fifa soccer world cup on the one channel in 3D. This can be found by doing a search on your 3D Digital TV, although the signal is relitivley week, most should be able to pick something up if they are in good signal areas.

Extra Equipment Compatibility...

Integra Recievers have released a 3D ready home theatre reciever, the HDMI cable technology has stepped up to version 1.4, which (if quality cables),  will carry the 3D signal on the cable.

So, the case is very strong that 3D is here to stay, a couple of questions remain though....

Will people really sit at home watching there Television with 3D glasses on?

How long will it be here for before it is superseded with (potentially) 4D?

My opinion (and it is only an opinion) is that "Yes" people will sit with their glasses on, because the experience will get better and better, imagine  Bathurst, the AFL grandfinal, all your favourite movies and TV shows in 3D, it will only get better as the technology improves and of course, the Glasses will get prettier. and as for 4D, technology is moving so fast that who knows what's just around the corner, but I will say this, 2 years ago I was told that "Blu-ray DVD technology will only be around for 3 years" and while I think it will last 3 years, it will only just. with Google launching Google TV, Bigpond delivery movies to the new LG and Samsung TVs, TiVo delivering movies via their CASPA service, and the PS3 giving access to the Sony store to buy movies, one thinks that delivery of HD content over the internet is just around the corner. the only thing left to ponder is if The Rudd Government will stay in power and what will happen to the NBN rollout for faster internet speeds and higher downloads to our homes.

Until next time...

Mark
